The film was based on "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Anderson, but this story was substantially revised to eliminate its downbeat ending and to provide a strong villain (the sea-witch is unnamed and less prominent in the original). Disney's The Little Mermaid premiered in November 1989.
Almost 80% of the film required some kind of special effects work. The scenes in which we are most aware of the effects are the two storms at sea--one leading to Eric's shipwreck and the other when the giant Ursula emerges from the waves. This is the last Disney film to use hand-animation.
